Why you should use a custom domain for you blog.
- Get link
- Other Apps
I have experimented with both custom domains and free sub domains in the past. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I have used sites like Wix, WordPress and as you can see, I also use blogger occasionally. I am going to share with you the pros and cons of the two platforms - free versus paid or custom domains.
The biggest advantage of platforms like Blogger is that you can easily rank high in search engine results for those people who are actively looking for you. This is different from ranking high for content which is what everyone seeks to achieve with content marketing. If you are a blogger using your name in the domain name of your free platform, people searching for your name can easily find you on top of search results.
The above scenario would be perfect for a portfolio and not for content marketing. So in my opinion, free platforms are ideal for freelancers to showcase their profiles. For bloggers, custom domains are the best choice. Why is that so?
Custom domains tend to receive a lot of traffic. I do not know why but its a fact I have come to realize from experience in using both platforms. I have a blog, Dekarai , which is performing better than any of my free blogs despite that I have been concentrating more on blogger than on Dekarai. I managed to have AdSense activated here and therefore I was putting a lot of effort in a bid to gain a lot of traffic to ultimately earn some revenue, but I was wrong.
The success of Dekarai is not a coincidence, I have also noticed that my Portfolio is also getting a lot of traffic regardless of the fact that it's just a static single page website without much content but my profile. This just shows the magic that a custom domain can bring to your website.
I have vowed to now concentrate on my custom domains and as such I shall be posting less frequently on this blog. I hope to activate adverts soon and above all rank high for content although I know it involves a lot of hard work as there is stiff competition out there.
*update : I am still using blogger , but I connected it to a custom domain. Blogspot is I great CMS and therefore I decided to stick around and help new bloggers to succeed. I now own another custom domain, Technews.co.zw, and its performance is superb.
